Do you know the story of when Grandma Simona’s picture was used in a Colgate marketing campaign? It’s one of those incredible memories that shows just how special she’s always been.
Grandma was only 16 years old at the time, living in 1934. Back then, retail shopping spaces weren’t like the malls we have today. These were places where people gathered to shop, socialize, and sometimes, participate in special events. One day, Colgate representatives were at a local shopping space taking professional portraits as they searched for one special girl to feature in their advertisements.
The portraits were available for purchase if you wanted to buy yours, but that didn’t mean your photo would be selected for the campaign. It cost $7 to purchase a portrait—a price that may not sound like much, but to put it into perspective, $7 in 1934 is equivalent to $160.26 in today’s money. For most of the girls, including Grandma, this was an expense they couldn’t afford.
Out of all the girls, the Colgate team chose Grandma Simona because of her most beautiful smile and great teeth—a natural fit for a brand known for dental care. Even though Grandma couldn’t afford to purchase her portrait, the company, as a kind gesture for selecting her, mailed her a copy of the picture for free. That picture became a cherished keepsake, a testament to her charm and the recognition she received at such a young age.
What makes the story even sweeter is that Grandma actually used Colgate products. It’s heartwarming to know that the company didn’t just pick her for her looks—she truly embodied what their brand stood for.
This story is a beautiful reminder of Grandma Simona’s unique charm and the way she’s always stood out. Her smile didn’t just light up a room—it made history!
